Am I Gay? Sonya's Gentle Quiz for Grown-Ups
Postmarked: a café table for two, and the other chair is yours.
Come here, darling, sit with me. A warm hug first, because if you typed "am I gay?" into Google at midnight, you deserve one.
Here's a little secret about your favorite dating coach: I'm bisexual. I've had crushes on men who made me laugh and women who made me forget my own name. So when you ask me this question, I'm not reading from a textbook. I've asked it myself.
Can an "Am I Gay" Quiz Really Tell You?
Honestly? No. Every am I gay quiz and am I gay test online, including mine below, is a mirror, not a judge. No website can decide who you love. What a good quiz can do is ask you the questions you've been too shy to ask yourself. Your answers are yours, and there are no wrong ones.
Sonya's 7 Gentle Questions
Grab a cup of tea, be honest, and don't rush:
- Who fills your daydreams? When your mind wanders to a romantic evening, who's sitting across from you?
- Whose attention makes you glow? Think of the compliment that stayed with you for days. Who gave it?
- Who do you notice first? When you walk into a room, whose smile catches your eye?
- What do the love stories you enjoy have in common? The films and songs that move you can whisper a lot.
- Imagine a first kiss. With a man, then with a woman. Which one makes your heart race, and which one feels like "no, thank you"?
- What have you been holding back? Is there a feeling you've quietly explained away for years?
- How do you feel reading this list? Relief, excitement, and fear are all clues. Relief is often the loudest one.
If your answers point toward the same sex, you may be gay or lesbian. If they point in more than one direction, welcome to my club, sweetheart: you may be bisexual. And if they point firmly toward the opposite sex, that's beautiful too. Some people search "I am not gay" just to feel sure, and that's allowed.
Your sexuality isn't a test you pass or fail. It's a story you get to discover, one crush at a time.
How Do I Know If I Am Gay? Sonya's Honest Take
Most people don't "know" in one lightning moment. For many of my clients, including men and women who were married for years, it arrived slowly: a friendship that felt like more, a dream they couldn't shake, a jealousy that surprised them. You don't need a label by Friday. You can say "I'm figuring it out," and that's a complete sentence.
Some people ask, "Why am I gay?" as if it were a problem to fix. It isn't. Science points to a mix of nature and life, but the more useful question is: What would make me happy? And people asking "how gay am I?" should know that attraction is often a spectrum, not a switch.
What to Do After You Take the Quiz
Be gentle with yourself. Talk to one person you trust before you tell the world. Read stories from people who came out later in life. And when you're ready, date the way I always coach: with honesty, curiosity, and a little flirtation. The right person will love every part of you.
If these questions stir up fear or sadness, you don't have to carry it alone. An LGBTQ+-affirming counselor or a local LGBTQ+ community center can help. This postcard is written for adults. If you're under 18, The Trevor Project (thetrevorproject.org) offers free, confidential support made just for you.
Quick Answers
Is an "am I gay" quiz accurate?
No quiz can define your sexuality. Use it as a starting point for honest reflection, not a verdict.
Can you be bisexual and not know it?
Yes. Many adults discover they're bisexual later in life, sometimes after marriage. Feelings can grow and change.
Is there an "am I gay" test for women?
The same questions work for everyone. Women often describe their feelings for other women first as intense friendship.
Now come here. A soft kiss on the cheek and one more hug. Whoever you love, you're loved here.
xo, Sonya
