On Reddit, the stories share the same sad pattern. One man described leaving work, having a few beers, ending up at a nightclub where a charming woman approached him, and waking up with almost no memory of what happened. Another thread, from someone planning nights out in Rio, was entirely about how to avoid getting their drink spiked. And long-time residents give newcomers blunt advice: be wary of anyone offering friendship or sex a little too easily, because sometimes the only interest is your wallet. One visitor even lost a large sum on Ipanema beach to a card trick by a drinks seller.

How to Stay Safe at Night

• Never accept drinks from strangers, and keep your eyes on your glass.
• Go out in a group and agree to head home together.
• Be wary of very fast invitations to "continue the party" somewhere you don't know.
• Carry only what you need: a little cash, one card, your phone well hidden.
• Feel strange suddenly? Ask friends, bar staff or police for help right away.
