Why People in Relationships Turn to AI Lovers, Sexting and Cams

Here's what nobody says out loud: wanting a little extra fantasy doesn't mean you don't love your partner. The reasons I hear again and again are human and tender:

• Curiosity about a kink, a role, or a gender you've never explored.
• Mismatched sex drives, when one of you simply wants more.
• Distance, when the person you crave is a time zone away.
• Fantasy without pressure: a safe place to say what you've never dared to say out loud.

Sex researcher Justin Lehmiller told Cosmopolitan that people who cheat with AI companions likely do it for many of the same reasons that drive people to cheat with other humans. In other words, darling, the app is rarely the real story. The need underneath it is.

What Exactly Counts as Cheating?

The honest answer: whatever breaks the agreement you made with each other. Some couples are strictly monogamous, some are open, and many never actually discussed the digital stuff at all. That's where the hurt comes from. Most therapists agree on one golden rule: if you'd hide it, it's already a problem.

Fantasy is not betrayal. Secrecy is.

Is Masturbating Cheating?

For most couples, no, sweetheart. Touching yourself is normal, healthy and wonderfully yours. It can relieve stress, help you learn what you like, and even make you hungrier for your partner. Here's where opinions split, darling. The same DatingAdvice.com and Kinsey study found that 61% of singles see sexting or falling in love with an AI as cheating. Taken separately, 32% said sexting with an AI chatbot counts, and 29% said the same of AI romance.

And it's not rare. In the BYU Wheatley Institute's "Secret Soulmates" survey of 2,431 Americans aged 18 to 30, 1 in 7 (15%) of those dating, engaged or married regularly interact with an AI romantic companion, and another 20% to 30% have at least experimented with one.

Many people draw the line at interaction. Watching a public cam show feels a lot like porn. A paid private chat with a real model, by name, night after night, feels more personal, and that's what partners say stings. Are OnlyFans models really chatting with you?
